Our story began with a dream of a place where one could buy good wine at a fair price. That’s how Wine Bureau was founded in Ukraine, a company where we realize our dreams with like-minded people. Today, Wine Bureau is one of the leading direct wine importers in Ukraine, offering a wide selection of spirits, craft beer, healthy foods, accessories, decor and personal care products. Over the years, many things have changed, but our principles and passion for what we do have remained constant. We believe that a successful business is a transparent and open one.
We opened goodwine in Kyiv — the largest specialized wine and spirits store in Europe, covering an area of 1,200 square meters. The project was born from a simple idea: to bring wine directly from producers and offer the best price on the market by bypassing distribution chains. The alcohol portfolio included 4,000 wines, 1,000 spirits, and 100 types of beer from around the world. Today, our assortment significantly includes healthy products, home accessories and decor, as well as floristry and personal care products.
In 2008, we launched direct wholesale sales through various channels: specialized stores, retail chains, HoReCa, regional distribution, and private clients. Today, Wine Bureau’s wholesale department has 9,000 clients, collaborates with most specialized wine stores in Ukraine, and has sold over 1,000,000 bottles. In 2009, the corporate client department, now known as Brut Buro, was launched.
This year saw the launch of three new projects. The first was direct food import, which became a separate business line. The idea behind it: we sell the products we want to eat ourselves. That’s why we ensure that goodwine offers the best healthy products. We search for suppliers worldwide and across every corner of Ukraine, buying directly from producers. We visit production facilities and know every farmer by name. We work with the best global brands and support Ukrainian producers.
This year, we also opened a second goodwine store in Kyiv (Obolon), covering 900 square meters, and launched the wine magazine "Guide to goodwine," which was published seasonally (the magazine has not been released since the full-scale invasion in February 2022).
Wine Bureau began working on partnership projects, significantly influencing the development of wine culture in Ukraine. This was largely thanks to our partners and friends — people who approach their business with honesty and dedication. We carefully select our partners and respect both large producers with history and small, humble winemakers who pour their soul into their family businesses.
P.S. This year, we welcomed our 100th employee.
The flagship goodwine store opened in a new building in the center of Kyiv, covering 2,500 square meters. Now it was twice as large, and food products took up half of the space. The store now included sections for groceries, fruits and vegetables, fish and seafood, meat, cheeses, gourmet foods, floristry, and home accessories under the Home by goodwine brand. Our first guests were greeted by our restaurant Pane Vino, which later transformed into Lucky Restaurant in 2015 under the leadership of chef Volodymyr Yaroslavsky.
In 2012, goodwine was named “Best Project of the Year” in the Food and Supermarket Design of the Year category by the British publication Retail Week.
This year, we opened a goodwine store in Donetsk — our first regional experience. In 2014, we had to close it, but nearly the entire staff was relocated to Kyiv.
Our own bakery and confectionery, Bakehouse, opened, becoming the only organic bakery in Ukraine that bakes bread on-site. We launched the goodwine.com.ua online alcohol store, offering wine and spirits with delivery across Ukraine. That same year, the first class of students was admitted to the Wine School sommelier program.
Wine Bureau significantly strengthened its position in the HoReCa segment. Today, 99% of the top 100 restaurants in Ukraine work with us.
goodwine expanded its boundaries and held three large-scale city events: BBQ Open Air and Farmer's Market introduced guests to local farmers and their products, and Whisky Dram became the first single malt whiskey festival, gathering 1,000 guests, 50 producers, and 200 unique single malt whiskey selections.
The flagship goodwine store opened the Yellow Place café. Here, the coffee wall shelves featured the widest selection of freshly roasted coffee in Ukraine. The culinary department began operating, adhering to high-quality standards and using only ingredients from goodwine shelves to prepare dishes. During this time, the “Personal Assistant” healthy food delivery service was also launched.
goodwine opened its third store in Kyiv's central department store. The 400-square-meter space featured a wine bar with a kitchen and a wine and spirits shop.
Meanwhile, the flagship goodwine store on Pechersk was updated: 101 Wine Bar and Shima sushi bar were opened, along with the culinary department and a gift packaging section. Home by goodwine launched an online store with delivery across Ukraine. goodwine experimented in brewing, introducing its first craft beer brewed using our own recipes.
In summer 2016, goodwine held the Kyiv Wine Festival, attended by over 5,000 guests and 50 producers from Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Chile, Argentina, and Moldova. In September, the second Farmer’s Market featured products from 50 farmers worldwide, with a focus on local producers. In November, the second Whisky Dram festival brought together 60 whiskey brands and 1,500 guests.
Wine Bureau’s HoReCa department began developing bar culture — organizing master classes, lectures, and training programs on mixology, bringing iconic bartenders from around the world, and developing cocktail recipes. The Bar Spirit Cup, an annual bartending competition in Ukraine, was launched.
P.S. In 2016, our company paid 371 million UAH in taxes and fees.
Wine Bureau purchased the former TetraPak complex in Podil, covering an area of 30,000 square meters. The space, now called M82, later became home to the Garage gastro space and hosted festivals such as Kyiv Wine and Whisky Dram, along with other city events.
Also in 2017, the first Bad Boy alcohol store opened on Kyiv’s Left Bank, covering 1,200 square meters.
In 2018, Wine Bureau paid 609 million UAH in taxes. By this time, the company employed over 500 people.
In December 2020, we launched Sabotage Wine, an importer and online store focused on natural wines, with delivery across Kyiv and Ukraine. The project highlights interesting producers who make wines with minimal or no intervention in production and grape growing. Sabotage Wine collaborates with winemakers from France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Australia, Spain, and Portugal. At its start, Sabotage Wine’s portfolio featured wines from 107 winemakers.
In March 2021, the flagship store opened the Chef’s Table fine-dining restaurant by chef Volodymyr Yaroslavsky. The second Bad Boy alcohol store also opened, this time in Lviv.
M82 saw the opening of the Garage gastro space, covering 1,200 square meters, which united four projects: Bakehouse bakery, Yellow Place café and coffee roastery, Sabotage Wine natural wine store in the form of a glass cube, and fine-dining neo-bistro Mirali. Mirali is a restaurant of contemporary Ukrainian cuisine led by chef Mirali Dilbazi, with a focus on seasonal and local products, collaboration with Ukrainian organic farms, and the use of in-house fermentation.
In May 2021, the corporate client department launched its own brand — Brut Buro, offering custom gift and event services.
Wine Bureau paid 992 million UAH in taxes in 2021.
The most challenging years for Ukraine in its history of independence, and a very difficult year for our company.
The full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, caught us at work. For the first few months, we worked however we could: some took up cashier duties for the first time, others moved to the warehouse, and some prepared pancakes to share with colleagues. We knew that our work was important. During this time, a large part of our efforts was focused on volunteering and charity.
On March 4, 2022, a russian missile destroyed our main warehouse near Kyiv, in Stoyanka. 10,000 square meters, 1.5 million bottles of wine, and 15 million euros in losses. But something survived — from the ashes, we salvaged the "Surviving Wines." A portion of the proceeds from each bottle sold was donated to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In this way, we raised 832,000 UAH for the Ukrainian military.
Eventually, our business began to recover. In October 2022, the flagship goodwine store launched Slow Beauty, a personal care project offering skincare, haircare, and facial products. We held on because all of Ukraine was holding on.
In January 2023, we began working on a new charity fund, Victoria, created and named in memory of our sommelier Vika, who was killed in October 2022 by russian drones in Kyiv. A russian drone took the lives of Vika, her husband Bohdan, and their unborn child. Vika had been a part of the goodwine family for six years. The focus of the project is the joint creation of a vineyard by goodwine and Stakhovsky Wines on a separate plot of land at Serhiy Stakhovsky’s estate. On this 0.5-hectare vineyard, Ukrainian Pinot Noir will be produced under the name Victoria. All proceeds from its sales will go to the Victoria fund and be used to support young Ukrainian families. More details can be found at victoria.goodwine.ua.
Some of our colleagues have joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. We stay in constant contact with them, eagerly awaiting news that they are safe. A few of our team members have already completed their service, but sadly, some, like our dear Maksym, will never return. We lost him in 2023, and in 2022, we lost Oleksandr and Volodymyr. Eternal memory to them. In 2023, our colleague Serhiy lost both feet, but after receiving prosthetics at Superhumans, he is now undergoing rehabilitation.
Despite the tough times, we continue to move forward. In December 2023, Bad Boy opened its third store, this time in Dnipro. We believe in a just peace and the end of the war and eagerly await the safe return of all our team members from the front lines.
